Which road do you drive to get to Hólmavík? 1)
Turn off the main road (nr. 1) when at Brú in Hrútafjörður fjord, and onto Djúpvegur road (nr. 61). That road is by far the most popular road to drive around Strandir. The distance from Brú to Hólmavík through the south part of Strandir is 115 km. and 68 km. are asphalt road. It´s OK to for all cars to drive the road during the summer. In Bitrufjörður fjord the asphalted road is narrower than in other parts of Djúpvegur road and as a result drivers should be careful when meeting and passing other vehicles. The highest point of Djúpvegur road from Brú to Hólmavík, 290 m. over sea level, is Ennisháls mountain between Bitrufjörður and Kollafjörður. Djúpvegur
road then continues from Hólmavík all the way to Ísafjörður through
Djúp and mountain road Steingímsfjarðar- 2) Road nr. 59, Laxárdalsheiði Laxárdalsheiði (nr. 59) is a 35 km. long mountain road, open all year round. It leads from Búðardalur town to Hrútafjörður fjord, arriving 2 km. north of Borðeyri village. The highest point on Laxárdalsheiði road is 200 m. above sea level. 3) Road nr. 69, Steinadalsheiði Steinadalsheiði (nr. 69) is a 17 km. long mountain road leading from Gilsfjörður ( nr. 60) to Kollafjörður fjord, and from there on to Djúpvegur (nr. 61). The highest point on Steinadalsheiði is 330 m. above sea level. Steinadalsheiði mountain is only open during the summertime, and is barely suitable for very small or low cars - there are two small streams that travellers have to cross. 4) Road nr. 605, Tröllatunguheiði Tröllatunguheiði (nr. 605) is a 26 km. long mountain road leading from the northern side of Gilsfjörður (nr. 60) to Strandir, arriving on Djúpvegur (nr. 61), 7 km. south of Hólmavík. The highest point of Tröllatunguheiði is 420 m. above sea level. Tröllutunguheiði mountain is a better choice than Steinadalsheiði for those driving smaller and lower cars, although it´s a bit uphill coming from Gilsfjörður. Tröllatunguheiði is only open during the summertime. 5) Road nr. 608, Þorskafjarðarheiði Þorskafjarðarheiði (nr. 608) is a 23 km. mountain road leading from Þorskafjörður fjord to Djúpvegur (nr. 61), arriving in the middle of Steingrímsfjarðarheiði mountain road. From there you can drive south until arriving at crossroads in Staðardalur valley. From the crossroads you can either turn left and drive to the northern part of Strandir or drive further south on Djúpvegur - there are 12 km. to Hólmavík from the crossroads. Þorskafjarðarheiði is 490 m. above sea level. Þorskafjarðarheiði mountain is only open during the summertime.
Roads on Strandir north of Hólmavík 1) Road nr. 643, through Bjarnarfjörður fjord and Árneshreppur The
road to Bjarnarfjörður fjord
and Árneshreppur
(nr. 643) goes through Bjarnar- The state of the road to Árneshreppur, north of Bjarnarfjörður fjord, has been improved in some parts during the past years. Despite that, there are still some road parts that have not been fixed yet, so it´s safer to drive slowly and carefully. The road from Djúpavík village to Gjögur is one that drivers should be especially careful about, but the road further north to the abondoned Eyri village in Ingólfsfjörður fjord is suitable for all cars. From Eyri it´s possible to go to Ófeigsfjörður fjord on a jeep, but from there it´s not possible for anyone to go further north, except for those who are planning on hiking. 2) Road nr. 645, to Drangsnes and from there to Bjarnarfjörður fjord The road to Drangsnes (nr. 645) around Selströnd has been improved greatly for the last few years. The road is a good gravel road for all cars. It´s possible to go straight to Bjarnarfjörður fjord by driving north, through the Drangsnes village. |
