PICTURES FROM STRANDIR

Djúpavík in Reykjarfjörður fjord. In Djúpavík is an old herring factory which has not been in operation since 1954. The beautiful waterfall´s name is Djúpavíkurfoss.

Close to Kollafjarðarnes in Kollafjörður fjord two trolls, a male and female, stand together by the shore. Centuries ago they tried to to dig the Wesfjords from the rest of Iceland so that the trolls could live there undisturbed by humans. The trolls were so engrossed in their work that they forgot about time, dawn crept upon them and the sun turned them into stones.

This picture is taken in the small motorboat harbour in Hólmavík. The older part of Hólmavík can be seen in the background. The Museum of Sorcery & Witchcraft is close to the harbour and restaurant Café Riis is also a few steps away. Not far away from Café Riis is the comfortable and conveniently situated Guesthouse on Borgabraut.

Hólmavík is a perfect place to walk around during the summertime. The name of the small mountain above the town is Kálfanesborgir, often called Borgir. Through Borgir lies a marked walking path which is very popular both by locals and tourists.

Strandir is a real paradise for hikers - whether they are experienced or beginners. Kirkjubólshringur is a marked hiking trail around Kirkjubólsfjall mountain, and on the picture above a group of hikers at all ages are resting at the highest peak of the walk, Hnúkar. Close to the walking path is the Guesthouse Kirkjuból and the Sheep Farming Museum in Sævangur is also a few steps away.

Summer nights in Strandir often look like this - the sky showing its most beautiful colours.

The enormous amount of driftwood in Strandir sets it mark on the shores. Most of the driftwood comes from Siberia. On the picture above Sigfús Snævar Jónsson from Kirkjuból is sitting on a pile of driftwood. The town Hólmavík is in the background.

Wintertime in Strandir can be hard, but the horses don´t let the snow affect them in any way. Strandahestar company in Hólmavik offers short tours on horseback and for those interested in longer journeys, the company Svaðilfari in Ísafjarðardjúp specialises in challenging horseback riding adventures. A riding tour can make a nice day into an unforgettable one.
